Why Teach in China

Before coming to China you need to ask yourself if you and China are a good fit.

TAKE THE QUIZ:

please answer each question honestly

  1. Why do you want to teach in China? Really working as a teacher, or sightseeing? If it’s sightseeing stop here, if it’s to teach in China then keep going.
  2. How flexible are you? China is not like living back home. If you think people will adapt to you, think again. You are a guest here, you are the one who will need to adapt, if you said you’re flexible; then keep going.
  3. Can you learn; are you teachable? It’s not necessary to be fluent in Chinese, but you need to realize that lack of language will be a constant problem. Communication issues tend to be the primary reason most foreign teachers become stressed out. If you are teachable then keep going.
  4. Are you seeking an adventure or a career? If it’s adventure, come as a tourist. If it’s a career, China can be a good place for that. Your will gain plenty of experience you can use later. If you are seeking to teach in China, keep going.
  5. Can you eat strange things? Being open to trying new foods and learning new customs is what makes teaching here so rewarding. If you are ready to try new things, then keep going.
  6. Do you really love teaching and children? If you have never taught before then China could be the place to discovering if this is your passion. China is also challenging to seasoned teachers because the Chinese educational system is unique. You must love kids. Chinese kids are very cute, but they can test your patience. Chinese parents will definitely test you, as they tend to be very hands-on and opinionated. However, if you love kids and at heart you’re a teacher, you will find teaching in China to be very rewarding.

What you need to do next:

  1. Gather all your documents (see The Process for details).
  2. You can hire a company to help you with the paperwork. This means paying someone to do it, but if you live far from a Chinese Embassy then it might be a good choice, as it will save you time.
  3. Do your homework, research the laws about working in China before you come. Know the rules and learn about employers you might want to work for, figure out where you might want to live and work in China. Do you need a special climate, (not too hot or cold) a big city, smaller city…ask yourself where you will best fit.
  4. Prepare to commit to a one-year contract. If not, you will find it difficult to find a good job or employer.
